Weszeli Langenlois Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2017

The Weszeli Story

“When all the elements of the ecosystem are in perfect harmony, the wines develop their distinctive character that only nature can bring forth.” – Rupert Summerer. Rupert was born into a long lineage of winemakers and, though his dream growing up wasn’t to take over the family estate, he nonetheless became the “next generation.” The estate was established in 1679, when the family practiced mixed farming. After 300 years, Rupert’s father converted the farm into a winery and focused completely on viticulture. Vineyard management and farming has always been primary to the Summerer family and regarded with uncompromising quality standards. Davis Weszeli joined the winery in 2011 as a partner, at which time the estate was renamed. Davis and Rupert share the philosophy that organic viticulture is of the utmost importance in preserving authenticity in wine and together they developed a name for their practices called The Principal Terrafactum – meaning biological diversity in the vineyard is the center of their work. In the cellar they treat each wine based on its own unique character, such as letting the wine sit with its lees or in barrel for as much time as needed, regardless of release shcedule. The results are always piercingly mineral focused whites with incredible depth and personality. The Weszeli estate is situated in the Kamptal region of Austria, and their 30 hectares of Gruner Veltliner and Riesling vineyards surround the town of Langenlois. The Kamptal is a unique valley region in Austria and one that sits at an altitude of 200-300 meters. The summer days area hot, though with the warm Pannonian winds that meet the cooler Northwest winds, the nights cool down significantly, causing high diurnal fluctuations. The soil is primarily loess, gneiss, and clay, ideal for growing Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. The long growing season and sunny autumn days allow the grapes to reach full physiological maturity. The Kamptal has been long known to produce some of Austria’s finest white wines.

This Gruner has notes of fresh wild flowers, subtle green apple notes, tender hints of nut aroma – Weszeli wines let you experience a kaleidoscope of tastes. Each of our Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings has its very own, unique character stemming from the depths of the Kamptal terroir. With a clear structure and a full body, they stand out by their elegant acidity and gripping minerality. Inviting creamy nose with aromas of orange zest, fresh meadow notes and apples, extremely crisp and vital, a touch of white bread The palate is juicy with lively fruit, light to medium body, aromas of citrus and quince, filigree in the finish, stimulating and charming.

Weszeli Terrafactum Eden Rose 2018

A refreshing blend of Zweigelt and Cabernet Franc. Fresh and piquant nose with currant and some citrus, floral hint, charming and inviting; Quite smooth fruit with a subtle acidity in the background, next to berries also some hibiscus, fresh root system, crisp, well balanced and tasty.

Skaramuca Plavac Mali 2016

The tradition of winegrowing and winemaking in the Skaramuča family is just about as old as the family from Pelješac peninsula itself. The highly renowned Croatian winemaker, Ivo Skaramuča is the owner and the founder of the Skaramuča brand wines. Although the winemaking history is as old as the family Skaramuča itself, the real success tale starts in 1992 when the Croatian legislation recognizes private grapes growing and winemaking which gives the Skaramuča brand a chance to position itself among the top Croatian wines. Today Skaramuča is one of the biggest Croatian private entrepreneurs in winemaking and the owner of the largest vineyard in the Dingač sort area. Mr. Skaramuča is a living proof that only hard work, dedication and affection towards wine allows one to achieve remarkable success, nurtured by himself, as well as by his family for years. Admirable enthusiasm, almost supernatural strength, yearning to create and work, as well as faith in success, are all characteristic of this exceptional man who has turned a vast woodland and stone area into a real vineyard paradise which leaves even the most envious among us breathless. The beautiful Dingač slopes feature numerous plavac mali groves nurtured and developed by Mr. Skaramuča over the past two decades, now possessing 165 000 plavac mali vines. The whole project of creating this stunning vineyard oasis would not be possible without unconditional support of his family: wife Jasna and children Igor and Ivana who have been brought up in the spirit of love towards wine and respect towards dedicated work and creation. Today Mr. Ivo Skaramuča leads his team on the path of realizing excellent results, working side by side with his son Igor, responsible for production and logistics, and his son-in-law Branimir Anđelić, handling wine sales and export. His wife Jasna, daughter Ivana and daughter-in-law Fani serve as unquestionable support in the process of creating top quality wines, as well as in all the additional activities the family engages in.

Plavac mali is the most significant among the autochthonous grape sorts in Croatia, resulting from interbreeding two other autochthonous Croatian grapes crljenka (aka Primitivo in Italy, Zinfandel in the USA) and Dobričić. Plavac mali realizes its full potential in the most extreme conditions on the Pelješac peninsula and is considered the king of red wines. The wine is dark – ruby color with a dark blue reflection, well-developed scent, vigorous and sharp tasting with a specific bouquet. The smell of Plavca Skaramuča is recognized as combination of sweet notes, dry or even baked fruit with mild aromas of cherries, vanilla and coffee with a hint of Dalmatian grass.Plavac is sometimes served chilled to 18 °C (65F), with seafood, grilled quality food fish and crabs, as well as red meat and game.
