This week we are exploring wines from Australia, the forgotten wine continent. Forgotten in figurative terms and literal terms. Australian wine had seen a quiet but meteoric rise over the last say 10-15 years, due mostly impart to a sea of mediocre super cheap juice filling the shelves of monster retail chains and around the country. The recent down-turn has been severe for these catastrophically adulterated, mass produced wines, due largely to a new demographic of drinkers that are better informed in regards to quality and have value choices from multiple continents, including South America and Spain. With the veil of “critter” labels finally removed from consumers eyes, a resurgence of the smaller family owned Australian producers has made an effort to grace America’s palate. These families are hell bent on proving that quality, well-balanced, yet flavorful wines can be produced in the Aussy sunshine and at very competitive prices to boot! Swing by this Saturday to sample a few that we feel really dance a tune for your hard earned dime.
West Cape Howe Winery Ironberry Chardonnay-Viognier– Western Australia. 75% Chardonnay with 25% Viognier. 88 points Steven Tanzer- “Pale gold. Pungent pear, peach and melon aromas are complemented by notes of sage and dried flowers. Juicy orchard fruit flavors are given a firm edge by a dusty citrus pith quality that adds a touch of dryness. Plump but not at all loose, finishing with good clarity and a touch of pit fruit nectar. I’d serve this with spicy Asian food.” Shelf $9.99 Tasting $8.99
Ballast Stone Steeple Jack Merlot– The Shaw family is meticulous with their vineyard site selection and has established vineyards of ultra premium quality that are located in two renowned South Australia wine-grape growing districts, McLaren Vale and Currency Creek. Wine experts taunt the Currency Creek region for producing consistent style, ultra premium quality and outstanding varietal definition wines. The Steeple Jack wines represent the fruit forward easy drinking bottlings that were enjoyed by the hard working steeplejacks. These craftspeople played a crucial role in constructing and maintaining our townships, completing stonework on the highest towers, oblivious to vertigo, gravity and mortality. Blackcurrant fruit with lavender and herbaceous undertones on the nose. A well structured, soft, full palate of cherry fruit amid cedary notes with good length and smooth tannins. Great with hearty winter stews. Best Price $7.99
Hope Estate Hunter Valley Shiraz– 100% Shiraz ~ 100% Estate Grown ~ 100% Family Owned. Hunter Valley is the first place that Syrah was planted in Australia according to U.C. Davis. Spicy pepper and nutmeg, concentrated blackberry with black plums and chocolate. The oak fermentation and maturation have enhanced the peppery and spicy characters of the wine. Open top fermenters have increased the fruit intensity and warm colors of the Shiraz. Smooth, juicy palate with rich mocha and spicy plums leading to an earthy finish. Mildly subdued compared to the rest of the tasting wines, but still Aussy through and through. Shelf $12.99 Tasting $11.69
Ballast Stone Petit Verdot– 100% Petit Verdot from a single vineyard on the Ballast Stone’s Currency Creek Vineyard. In the 1800s Goolwa, was the most important river port in South Australia linked by rail to Port Elliot, where sailing ships unloaded ballast stone to refill their holds with wool and grain for their return trip to England. Buildings on Ballast Stone Estate Vineyards are made from this ancient stone. Deep, dark black cherries, violets and soil. Usually seen in Cabernet based blends due to its fine tannic structure. As a stand alone variety, this wine is powerful and rich, with a very long cellaring potential. Grab a few of these to put away for a few years! Shelf $15.99 Tasting $14.39
Saint André de Figuière Côtes de Provence Magali Rosé
Lioco Sonoma County Chardonnay– completely natural wines from California.

~ Ashevilles Best Free Wine Tasting ~
Pascal Bellier Cheverny– 80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay from a biodynamically farmed estate in the A.O.C. of Cheverny deep with in the far eastern reaches of the Loire in Touraine and just south of Chambord. The Bellier family has grown their estate to over 80 acres gradually over the last 50 years with some old vine still in harvest, but intelligent replanting has left many young vines as well. Pascal Bellier’s Cheverny displays a bit of the warm ripeness with caraway, salt, and grapefruit rind pungently inflecting both nose and palate; with a grapefruit, melon, and passion fruit core; and almost palpable underlying chalkiness. It finishes with impressive if faintly bitter grip but enough juicy refreshment. A fabulous seafood wine. Shelf $16.99 Tasting $14.99
Jean-François Mérieau Les Hexagonales Pinot Noir This is a new brand from Jean-François Mérieau, one of the young stars of the Loire Valley. Representing tremendous value, these wines reflect winemaking philosophy of Mérieau: single varietal bottlings, often from a single parcel; a terroir-specific approach; and clean, crisp, delicious wines. Pinot Noir from the appellation of Saint Pourcain in the Eastern Loire. The soils are chalky with gentle sloping. Aged in tank for 8 months before release. Bright strawberry red, with crushed rose pedals and cherry on the nose. The mouth is dry and minerally with brisk red fruit and flowers with a touch of spice. Very nice cool climate Pinot Noir. Shelf $12.99 Tasting $10.99
Domaine Paul Autard Côtes du Rhône– 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Counoise. Jean-Paul Autard has managed his family’s domaine since the age of seventeen. The Autard property, situated between Courthézon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is composed in large part of the distinctive Châteauneuf galets roulés(large round river stones) and deep, sandy soils. The vines range in age from forty to ninety-five years! This 2010 version of the estates’ Côtes du Rhône marks the second vintage here at Appalachian Vintner and I have to be honest with you, this wine is one of the greatest values we’ve ever sold. The estate is known for its hedonistic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, particularly the Cuvee de la Cote Ronde which is from a tiny plot of ninety-five year old vines, leaving this, the estates young wine, almost unknown. The pedigree behind this wine is instantly noticed with its blast of intense black cherry, mineral and . The palate is creamy and minty with a mouth coating, lengthy finish that just doesn’t stop. No pesticides, or chemical anti-rot products or fertilizers are used at this estate. This wine is very limited this year and we are already nearing the last few cases available. Be sure to swing by on Saturday to grab a few for the coming weeks. Shelf $15.99 Tasting $14.99
Domaine Faillenc Saint Marie Corbières Rouge– Faillenc Sainte Marie is a small property, with only eight hectares of vineyards stubbornly clinging to the rocky foothills of Mont Alaric. The vineyards are buffeted by the northerwesterly Tramontane wind or the southerly Autan breezes coming off the nearby Mediterranean, creating an extremely dry climate. Syrah, Grenache Noir, and Cinsault are the red grape varieties raised here. The terroir is composed of inhospitable, rocky limestone terraces. Only vines, olive trees and some scraggly brush survive under these harsh conditions. As a result, yields are naturally low. The grapes are strongly marked by their environment and this powerful character shows through in the wines. The charming, quirky personality, sense of humor and creativity of Dominique Gibert, as well as the sensitive and diligent vineyard work of his wife, Marie-Therese Gibert, also mark these wines, both in their style and in their names and labels. A completely natural wine with native yeasts and the wild alluring smells of the countryside in the glass. ATTENTION if you love wines with funky, gamey notes reminiscent of life on the farm this is your wine! Shelf $17.99 Tasting $16.19
