Asheville’s Best Wine Tasting– Saturday, April 28th, 2012 3PM-7PM

The evening of Friday April 27th , we will be hosting a private wedding rehearsal from 6:30-9:30. The store will be open to the public for off premise service only and thus the bar/patio will be closed to the public. We apologize in advance for any inconveniences this may cause.
This Saturday we’ve amassed a collection of Spanish wines from some of the greatest production areas the country has to offer. If you placed two imaginary lines down the center and middle of the Spanish continent, all of these wines would originate in the middle & northeastern quadrant of your map. Please note that due to the premium nature of most of these wines only one sample bottle will be opened and each guest is asked to limited their tastings to a single serving of each wine.
Huguet de Can Feixes Blanc Selecció 2010– D.O. Penedès. Only free-run must from rigorously selected grapes is used at this estate, which is located in the Penedès at the very tip of Spain. Parellada (locally, Montonec), Macabeo, Chardonnay (!), and a touch of Malvasía de Sitges. Parellada at its best, from high-altitude, gravelly mountain soils: intense lemon-oil aroma with firm acid structure enhanced by the rare, glyceric Malvasía. Stony and aromatic, reminiscent of France’s Chablis or Rheingau. 89 points ……more Shelf $14.99 Tasting $13.49
La Rioja Alta, S.A.VIÑA ALBERDI Rioja Reserva 2005– D.O.C. Rioja. Located on the western edge of the Rioja region and at higher elevations than other areas, the Rioja Alta is known more for its “old world” style of wine. A higher elevation equates to a shorter growing season, which in turn produces brisk fruit flavors and a wine that is lighter on the palate, pairing very well with food. This Reserva is made only in the best years, 2005 being one for sure, is a massively delectable treat and will reward the patient wine buyer with years of pleasant drinking ……more Regular $23.99 Tasting $21.59 As part of any case $19.99
Bodegas Condado de Haza Tinto 2008 – D.O. Ribera del Duero. It would be a disservice to this wine and the Ribera del Duero, not to explain the history of its winemaker and crowned star- Alejandro Fernández. Mr Fernández & his wife Esperanza almost single handedly led the resurrection of the then defunct Ribera del Duero in the early 1970’s with the creation of Pesquera. The Condado de Haza one of their “younger” properties, abandoned for years gained new life under their hands and now is one of the top estates in all of Spain ……moreNational Retail $31 AV $29.99 Tasting $26.99
Celler Dosterras Vespres 2009– D.O. Montsant. 80% Garnatxa (Garnacha) and 20% Samsó (Carignan) from old vines, aged 8 to 10 months in French oak cooperage. Founded in the early 2000s by Josep Grau upon a base of Garnatxa and Samsó (Carignan) vines between 40 and 100 years of age in the traditional Priorat villages of Marça, Capçanes and Falset. D.O. Montsant was separated from the main D.O.C. Priorat in 2002 due to its lower overall elevation and flatter topography. The area still benefits from the llicorella, chalk and clay terroirs that wash down from Priorat and lend both areas to boldness and minerality 92 points ……more Shelf $24.99 Tasting $21.99
Celler Pasanau Ceps Nous 2010– D.O.C. Priorat one of the steepest areas under vine in all of Spain. Garnacha, Mazuelo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, including fruit from Pasanau’s most recently planted vineyards in La Morera. The Pasanau family are perennial growers in Priorat, with vineyards located in the highest municipality of the region, literally skirting the sheer rock wall of the Sierra de Montsant which forms Priorat’s viticultural boundary. At over 2,400 feet, Pasanau’s “Finca La Planeta” dominates the regional landscape and experiences Priorat’s widest daily temperature variation ……more Shelf $27.99 Tasting $25.19 limited

This Saturday & the wines of CARLOS BASSO, the man the myth the legend. Carlos and the current generation created the company that we know today in 1996 by selling Bodegas Santa Ana, the family’s gargantuan property and purchasing a tiny property in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Appalachian Vintner has supported sustainably farmed Carlos Basso line of wines since opening in 2008. Stop by this Saturday to meet the distributor, taste the special soil and micro climates of the Uco Valley and see why. Also featuring the South American Chardonnay smack down, Chile vs Argentina.
Viña Ventisquero Queulat Gran Reserva Chardonnay– 100% Chardonnay from a sustainably farmed single vineyard in Chile’s Casablanca Valley. Queulat wines take their name from southern Chile’s most spectacular hanging glacier, a sight that is both imposing and elegant. This Chardonnay is crystal-clear with a pale golden yellow color. The nose evokes tropical fruits such as papaya and mango, scents of honey and vanilla. A full-bodied rich white, acidity, with a fresh finish of fruit and delicate touches of vanilla. Enjoy with Gruyère and Edam-type cheeses, pastas in white sauce, fatty fish such as salmon, and rock fish such as grouper, tilefish and butterfish. It is also an excellent match cheesecake! National Retail $16 A.V. $11.99 Special Solid Case $9.59
Bodegas Amalia Carlos Basso Dos Fincas Chardonnay– 100% Chardonnay from Los Arboles, Tunuyán, Mendoza, Argentina at 1150 meters (3.700 ft) above sea level Vineyard: 200 hectares (500 acres) (planted in 1997 and 1998). Brilliant gold color with greenish highlights. Notes of guava and melon on the nose, with a spicy stone fruit driven palate. Finishes fresh, with plenty of balancing acid. Shelf $12.99 Tasting $11.69
Bodegas Amalia Viña Amalia Malbec Reserva– 100% single vineyard Malbec. 91 points Robert Parker: “The 2010 Malbec Reserva delivers lots of spice, floral notes, sandalwood, and black cherry aromas in its inviting bouquet. Smooth, silky, and plush on the palate, it over-delivers in a big way. Another outstanding value………… Vina Amalia’s entire collection of new releases offers excellent value. The line-priced, lower-tier wines are labeled Dos Fincas.” We would add that this Malbec drinks like wines priced well over $50 and that it is a complete departure from the 2009, which was deeply rustic, this wine is proving to truly be terrior driven and completely dependent on the weather during any given growing season. National Retail $21.99 A.V. $19.99 Tasting $16.99 Special Solid Case $15.99
Bodegas Amalia Viña Amalia Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva– 100% single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The “yang” to the Malbec “yin”in the Viña Amalia collection. This Cab is seriously structured, with slow, stern aromatics and intense red color. Elegant aromas and flavors of fresh picked red berries, marmalade, baking spices, and dirt. Very balanced structure, with medium weight tannins and refreshing acidity. It certainly will continue to develop over the next five-six years and continue its evolution well beyond that. Previous scores: 2009 90 points RP, 2008 91 points RP. National Retail $21.99 A.V. $19.99 Tasting $16.99
