Hermann Moser ‘Karmeliterberg’ Grüner Veltliner
Weingut Hermann Moser is run by Martin and his wife Carmen Moser. The estate is 300 years old and is located in the village of Rohrendorf in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The vineyards cover 19 hectares and are the best vineyards from Rohrendorf. 85% of the surface is planted with white varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller and Pinot Blanc, the remainder with Zweigelt.Karmeliterberg, the Carmelite Mountain, was hand harvested and left to macerate over three hours before fermentation. The must is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steels tanks. Clear typical loess mineral notes with yellow apples and asparagus. Bright and inviting, citrus fruits and rhubarb with some white pepper spice. Karmeliterberg is great with bacon, smoked ham or any charcuterie, it will also pair well Sunday roasts, fish, lightly spicy Asian dishes. It is also a great match with asparagus or artichokes.
El Castro de Valtuille Godello
Godello is a white varietal from the cool climate region of northwestern Spain, especially Galicia, Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo. The origin of the varietal is associated with the town of Godella, near Valencia, where it was first planted in the 1800’s. In the 1920’s a Galician trader brought Godello to Galicia. Godello almost disappeared in the mid-1900’s, it was often replaced with higher yielding varietals. In the 1980’s, research and experiments with Godello resulted in increased interest and planting. Godello is often compared to Chardonnay and is said to ‘combine the structure of white Burgundy with the finesse of a juicily mineral grape’ (Jancis Robinson). Whole cluster pressed, the must is left overnight to clarify, fermneted in 500 liters barrels. Some barrel aging. Bright yellow, flowery with some citrus and a slight hint of oak. It is tasty and focused, white fruits with some spice, greart minerality. It will pair very well with tarragon chicken, clam chowder, or even quail or fish such as cod, halibut or clams. This is a great alternative to Chardonnay, very Burgundian in style.
Wildekrans was purchased in the 1970’s and set up as a mixed farming operation of wheat, cattle, sheep, ostrich, fruit, wine and table grapes. With time it became obvious that Wildekrans was an ideal spot to grow vines. The cool Atlantic sea winds and lean soils allow their grapes to reach optimal ripeness and impart the characteristic cool climate aromatic profile that their grapes are renowned for. Today Wildekrans consists of 35 hectares of grapes, all planted in a clay rich subsoil mixed with a topsoil of stone and sand which ensures well structured subtle white wines with great acidity, balance and full, rich, earthy red wines with silky tannins.
Castro Ventosa Mencia Bierzo Crianza
Castro Ventosa was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and the family owns the estate ever since. The Perez family owns 75 hectares of Mencía vineyards in Bierzo making them the biggest owners of this varietal within the Bierzo D.O. The Bierzo appellation is made of 5 000 hectares with 2 500 ha planted with white varietals and 2 500 ha planted with Mencía and there are 5 000 landowners within the appellation.
Raúl Pérez, who now runs the winery, is a figurehead for Bierzo wines in Spain. Castro Ventosa produces three different Mencía; Valtuille, El Castro de Valtuille and El Castro de Valtuille “Joven Mencia”. Mencía is indigenous from Bierzo and some suspect that it is an ancient clone from Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand picked, extended maceration and fermented in 500 liters French oak barrels. Half of the production is fermented with the full cluster in oak barrels. Aged for just over a year in French oak barrels. Intense purple, balsamic and vegetal aromas, It is balanced and complex with soft and well integrated tannins. Well balanced and elegant. This Mencía goes very well with coq au vin, in place of a Pinot Noir, it is also a winner with any game dishes.
